Punjab Pollution Control Board is working under the administrative control of the Department of Science, Technology & Environment, Govt. of Punjab headed by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Punjab being Minister Incharge.
The Department of Science, Technology & Environment mainly co-ordinates the promotion of S&T inputs in the developmental process with specific reference to rural areas as well as science popularization activities. The Government achieves these objectives through Punjab State Council for Science & Technology.
To preserve and enhance the quality of the natural environment, including water, air and soil quality; conserve and protect flora, fauna and other natural resources; enforce Environmental Acts and Rules made by the Central Government and Government of Punjab; coordinate various environmental policies and programs. The department started its Environment wing after the enactment of Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 to preserve the wholesomeness of water. Punjab Pollution Control Board has been entrusted the task of implementation of environmental laws in the State of Punjab. Board was constituted in the year 1975 to preserve the wholesomeness of water. Subsequently, with the enactment of other environmental laws the responsibility to implement the provisions of such laws was also entrusted to the Punjab Pollution Control Board in the State of Punjab.
The Department is under the Administrative Control of Minister of Cabinet rank for Science, Technology & Environment. The Department is headed by The Principal Secretary/Secretary, Science Technology and Environment assisted by one Joint Secretary/Special Secretary/Additional Secretary/Joint Secretary.
